A small travel through history
In Xerokampos at site “Farmakokefalo”, near the chapel of St. Nicholas, many ancient ruins have been found.
Systematic excavations have revealed a small but significant part of a Hellenistic city surrounded by a strong wall which width reached almost 2.5 meters. Also, houses with many rooms, squares and streets, of that period, have come to light.
Across the bay of Xerokambos there are 3 small islets called “Kavali”.

With its magnificent nature and constant landscape alternation, Crete of four seasons never gets boring. The first visit to Crete is usually followed by a second, as visitors are enchanted by the beauty of the island.
Must Visit Beaches in the area
Alona beach (Krinakia) – formed near the exit of Gorge Katsounaki, east of Xirokambos settlement. The torrent flowing in the gorge during winter exits on the beach Potamos, next to the strikingly beautiful sand beach of Alona. Alona beach is full of sand dunes covered by the white sea daffodils in autumn. Hiking in the canyon is quite easy and the landscape with tall walls is very wild; you can walk upside down from Alona.
Roussospasma beach – f you have the courage to walk a bit further along the rocky shore, you’ll reach a small fjord after 1km with the small pebbly beach of Roussospasma (or Rousso Skisma) at is innermost point, very well protected by the winds. The beach is surrounded by red-soiled limestone, which can very easily collapse. Thus reaching the beach is diffucult and attention should be taken for the stone falls. Of course, if you have a boat, this beach is one of the most isolated that you could find in Crete and its rocky bottom is also suitable for snorkelling. The fjiord is called Roussospasma (meaning red cracking / break in Greek) because it reminds of a cracking in the reddish grounds of the area.
Potamos beach – West of Alona, there is another beach, Potamos, at the exit of the river (potamos) Katsounaki with large round pebbles, which can be reached by car, by driving along the river of the region towards the sea. It is not something special, but it is certainly very quiet and secluded. This beach is also called Italika, after some houses of Italians on the beach.
